A root canal, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure designed to repair and save teeth with damage to the tooth pulp. Root canal therapy gets its name from the fact that the treatment involves removing the diseased tooth pulp along with the nerves located within a tooth's root canal. A damaged tooth left untreated can cause significant tooth pain, swelling, an abscess, or bone loss, which can potentially lead to tooth loss.

Do You Need a Root Canal?

A root canal is necessary when there is an infection or inflammation of the pulp inside the root canal due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental treatment. Signs you need root canal treatment may include tooth discoloration, sensitivity to heat or cold, a persistent toothache, swelling or tenderness, or a pimple-like bump on your gums. At times, you may require a root canal and not experience any symptoms, so it's important to keep up with your routine dental exams during which we will evaluate your oral health to pinpoint any problems areas we need to address.

What Should You Expect?

We will start by administering local anesthesia to numb the area, and you may also opt for inhaled or oral sedation to keep you comfortable during the procedure. We will make a small hole to access the inside of your tooth and will remove the damaged and diseased pulp. Next, we will shape, clean, and sterilize the area to kill any remaining bacteria and to reduce your risk of further infection. Once the tooth chamber is prepared, we fill it using a rubber-like material called gutta-percha and will place a temporary filling in the cavity. The last step is placing a permanent crown to protect and strengthen your treated tooth and to restore its form and function.

Care After Root Canal Therapy

Make sure to avoid chewing on the treated tooth until a crown is placed on it. It’s imperative that you maintain good oral hygiene practices at home, including brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily. You'll also need to keep up with your routine dental exams and cleanings to help keep your mouth in tip-top shape. With proper care, a tooth treated with a root canal can stay healthy for a lifetime!
