We may recommend extracting a tooth that is broken or severely damaged due to trauma, decay, advanced gum disease, or infection of the tooth pulp. We may also need to remove teeth to prepare for orthodontic treatment if you have a crowded mouth. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often need extraction due to decay or damage or due to being impacted, meaning they are trapped in the jaw. We may also recommend the removal of wisdom teeth if they have the potential of causing problems down the road.

What Should You Expect?

First, we will start by numbing the area using a local anesthetic. You may opt to breathe in nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas so that you can relax during the procedure. We may recommend oral sedation, which will make you drowsy, or even general anesthesia, which will allow you to sleep comfortably through the surgery. You will require a simple extraction to remove a tooth that is readily visible and accessible, or a surgical extraction when a tooth is broken or impacted.

The Healing Process

Once the tooth removal procedure is over, the healing process begins. Following the extraction, you will need to apply an ice pack to the area to reduce any swelling. You may experience some discomfort which you can alleviate using the medication we prescribe.

Make sure to refrain from smoking or drinking through a straw for the first 48 hours after the procedure to avoid dislodging the clot forming in the socket, which can cause a painful condition known as dry socket. We may recommend replacing your extracted tooth with an implant or a dental bridge to prevent the adjacent teeth from shifting into the gap, which can affect your bite and make it hard to chew.
