Is It a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency can be potentially serious and should be addressed. Ignoring a  problem can increase the risk of permanent damage along with the need for extensive and costly treatment down the road.

If unsure if you require emergency dental care, ask yourself the following questions. Do you have a severe toothache? Is there any swelling to your mouth, face, or jaw? Have you suffered trauma to your mouth or face? Are any of your teeth loose or knocked out? Is there uncontrolled bleeding from your mouth? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you will likely require emergency dental treatment.

What Should You Expect?

When you come in for emergency care, we may administer sedation to ensure your comfort. We may use x-rays to assess the extent of injury or damage. While our emergency dentist will spare no effort to preserve a tooth through restorative dentistry procedures or dental surgery, in some cases our only viable option may be tooth extraction. Dental emergencies often cause stress and anxiety, so we would like to reassure you that you will receive exceptional, gentle care.

Common Dental Emergencies

Severe Toothaches

Rinse with warm water and use dental floss to remove any lodged food. If you have swelling, apply a cold compress. Never place aspirin or any painkiller on the affected area to avoid damaging your gum tissue. Contact us as soon as possible for emergency care.

Knocked-out tooth

Hold the tooth by its crown and rinse it off with water if it is dirty while making sure not to touch the root. If possible, try to return the tooth to its socket without forcing it in. If that’s not possible, store the tooth in a container of milk and contact us as immediately. A knocked out tooth has the highest chance of being saved when treated within an hour of being knocked out.

Abscess

An abscess is a potentially serious condition that will need emergency treatment. Damage can occur to the surrounding tissue and teeth, and the infection may spread to other parts of the body. If you find a painful, pimple-like swelling on your gum, you likely have an abscess. Contact us immediately for emergency care.

A chipped or broken tooth

Rinse your mouth using warm water. Apply a cold compress to keep any swelling down and contact our office immediately.

Lost crown or filling

If you have over-the-counter dental cement, you can place it where the filling fell out to hold your crown in place. Never use super glue. Contact us right away for an appointment.
